makers mark

hi am haveing the hardest time etching my makers mark on my knives.
i have the ecth-o-matic and one time it will do ok the next it will look like cracked ice around my name. what machine are y'all using and how are you using it. Please HELP!!!!!!!!! Thanks Toole

The cracked ice look is usually the stencils fault.
Homemade ones are terrible about it, especially if you use an aggressive electrolyte.

The Crawford designed etcher is dead simple to make, but there is a better tutorial out there with schematics.

My only beef with it is that the outputs are backwards, he's got red as negative, black as positive.
