Often times I see Smiths soak their billet in a bucket of liquid does anyone know what this liquid is , a flux of some sort?

I know some people use kerosene.

The nice thing about that type of fluxing is it wont eat up Kao-Wool and the Light weight refractory fire brick like Borax does. It works well in forges like the Atlas. Stinks though! I've heard you can use any kind of oil based solvent. I dont know how true that is though?
