First Ever heat treating!

Ill tell you what finally worked for me. I picked one steel (1084) and kept at it until I nailed the HT for it. In the begining I thought I needed to learn how to HT all knife steels, but then I began to notice that all the good makers use 1 or 2 different steels depending on the application of the knife. The reason is they have found a way that works for them to nail the HT for those steels and they can repeat those results everytime.

As for a hamon.....ask someone who know:( Ive still not been able to get a good one.

Ernie I can't say for sure you will. I did a blade in 1084 and couldn't see anything. Bubba-san was looking at it and found it and then did an etch on it. Then I could see it. faint but could see it. So I can't say yes you will or no you won't. Try to stay out of the wind when running your forge. The wind whipping will change things.
