Been wanting to upgrade that grinder since I've got it, so here's the deal :

Looking around on the internet I saw people claiming you can run a 220-440v 3phase motor from a 220v 1 ph VFD.

Am I totally wrong? Definitely don't want to order and be sorry once it gets here.

Yep! Its certainly doable. I run 3hp 3 phase motor on a couple of my grinders, both from a single phase 220V plug. My advice is to steer clear of the "cheap" VFDs. Over the years I have come to trust KBAC VFDs as the easiest to install/maintain, and the most reliable. I can't count the number of phone calls and emails I've fielded from folks who insisted on buying "the cheapest I could find" VFD, and they had nothing but problems.

Here's where I buy most of my VFDs..... just make sure you purchase the correct model for the power input you'll be using, and the HP motor your running.

running a 3 phase motor using a 120V(1.5Hp max) or 220V(usually up to 3Hp) VFD is how most of us get variable speed. TECO/Westinghouse, Allen Bradley, Baldor, Leeson, and Siemens are trusted industrial suppliers and make VFDs that are designed to run 24/7 for years without failure. PM me what you are looking for and I can work you up a quote.
