I have had this 2 oz Plumb ball peen hammer for most of my life, it was probably my grandfathers. Over the years I have looked at it and thought about making a better handle. Last week I wanted to peen a pin and dug it out. Yesterday I needed a diversion from the paying work, so I made a long thin handle out of white oak (didn't have hickory). 3 coats of boiled linseed oil finish, and polished the faces to 600 grit. The other handle is one I turned on the lathe when I was a kid about 14 or 15 years old. It has much better balance and "heft" now.
