    Rockwell hardness tester

The 3JS is a superficial hardness tester and Wilson says it requires a "precision diamond" penetrator. You might want to do some research on this. If you need a new precision diamond penetrator, the cost in 2009 was $500.00. A lot of the old JS testers were converted to JR testers, you want to...

Grain direction on O-1 and A-2?

If somebody was cross rolling a slab every other pass they would need a rolling mill several hundred feed wide. Look at the picture, the width of the cross roll has to be twice as long as the previous longitudinal pass. The backup rolls would weigh several million pounds. This is either fantasy...

Could someone please explain what "cross rolling" is, and at what part of the process it is employed. Thanks, John

Anyone use a rock for hollow grinding a blade?

I can't tell for sure, but that looks like a face mounted wheel. In which case you wouldn't use the OD of the wheel for grinding. You might want to check that.

    300 series stainless

303 is free machining stainless steel, it shouldn't be confused with all of the other 300 series stainless steels that are difficult to machine. 303 was commonly called "screw machine stock" because it was used to make threaded parts on high speed screw machines. It's the SS that was designed to...

    300 series stainless

300 series stainless steel work hardens ahead of the cut. In other words, the last revolution your drill bit made left the bottom of your hole work hardened about .005 deep. If the next revolution cuts less than .005 deep, your cutting through the work hardened zone. The key is to stay ahead of...

    Diamond Penetrator For Hardness Test

I had the same choice for a Wilson hardness tester, a low price diamond from China or a $250.00 diamond from a US supplier. I can't tell the difference in performance. On the China comment, I have a patented product that I invented and market, the basic process is laser cut, brake, weld, powder...

How long you been making knives?

From where I standing right now, the starting line looks a little blurry, but mid 1960s would put me at about 50 years. John

    Where to find???

You might try looking for magnetic parallel bars, you can find them in a longer length to width ratio than you can find in a magnetic chuck. They are permenate magnets though.

Hardness tester - use and accuracy on forged blades?

Eddie, it has to be mounted flat. You can get an adjustable angle block, or a sin plate or make a tapered shim to hold it flat. John
