I've never seen photos of air bubbles in a piece of steel before. I don't think that happens too often with rolled steel.

A few ideas: 1. Sphereodizing hypereutectoid steels with just a forge. (In the event you can't put the blade in an oven at 1250 F after quenching into martensite.) 2. Using a "pre-quench" with D2 (A2?) in order to refine grain. 3. Forging stainless. Taboo? Is it O.K. as long as you don't reach...

I keep it simple, myself. I weld up a piece of 6" tube to a piece of 1/4" flat plate. When I'm ready to HT, I hit the tank with a weed burning propane torch (from harbor freight) until I get it to the temp that I want.

I haven't changed my Parks' yet, but I change my peanut oil when it won't get to 400 F anymore. (I marquench my A2 in it.) (Don't ask...it's a habit I picked up a few years back.)
