I was searching for parts to build a grinder, that I could buy in Canada. I found a nice 3 phase motor and now I know that I would need a VFD. Unfortunately, I am just not that familiar with them. Is this a VFD http://www.automationdirect.com/adc...l)/GS1_Drive_Units_(120_-z-_230_VAC)/GS1-22P0

If so, is it the kind I am looking for to build a grinder?

the one you have listed is 3 phase in, 3 phase out. you need something that is 240 volts AC single phase in and 240 volts AC three phase out. this model would work http://www.automationdirect.com/adc...ts_(115_-z-_230_-z-_460_-z-_575_VAC)/GS2-22P0. you did not mention what size motor(HP) you bought.
the item you listed is a static converter. it basically runs the motor with 2 phases of electricity instead of 3. Another option is a rotary phase converter which produces true 3 phase power.

As The Count said you need to stick with the KBAC 27D. The ones that you have suggested draw air through for cooling. It is also drawing metal grindings into it and will short it out soon. Then it is ruined.

The 27D is good for motors up to 2 hp.

I can supply you with a motor and VFD along with wiring kit and instructions. Just e-mail me.

Yes Tony - the 3 phase motor you linked to will work just fine - it's a TEFC rated, 230VAC 3 ph required which is what the VFD you will use does provide. Another choice for VFD drives is the EV Micro VFD by Teco Westinghouse. Ed C. reported he's had problems with the drive, but it's worked for me. Here's a thread where this is talked about: http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php?36274-VFD-help

Good luck with your project - it's fun building stuff! I guess that's why we're into knifemaking?

if you need some help, send me a pm. I size, source, install and repair motors and drives at the office for my job.
JMHO, unless you are going to be grinding 8-10 hours a day in an unventilated room, i would not worry about getting metal in the converter. if you think it might be an issue, you can buy a piece of furnace air filter material for next to nothing at your local big box hardware store and cover the vents with it.
