Tempering oven idea?

What do you guys think of this for a tempering oven?

Big enough and gets to 480°F. My thinking is it’s going to keep a Accurate Temp as it’s for use in labs and that sort of thing. I know a oven would probably be best I just don’t have the room. Anyone else use a lab oven?

I suspect the oven will hold temps just fine, but you say "big enough" - I never saw the dimensions listed for part number 202-00T, but 202-00S is only around 10" in size (25cm). I'm sure I missed where the size of 202-00T was listed.

Me being the cheapskate I am I use a $10 toaster oven picked up used and controlled by a $40 PID.

took me a while but Ifinally found measurements. I believe this one was 15 1/2” long or so. Don’t remember debth. I will do some moreresearch on the PID controlled oven. Tempering has been driving me nuts lately!

@KenH you know a lot more about electronics then me so would it be a lot harder to add a PID to a convection oven over a toaster oven because of the fan?

I THINK you can buy one of the kitchen type "built-in" ovens for less then that.... and get one that holds +/- 10F...... however, if space is at a premium......

Convection or normal doesn't enter into the equation when wiring in a PID. Somebody did a GREAT WIP on building a toaster oven for tempering. They did a real job, even took oven apart and added insulation around sides to hold a higher temperature. They made a cutout and mounted PID in toaster oven. Here it is, I found the thread: https://knifedogs.com/threads/new-temper-oven.50379/#post-395924

I took the simple route by putting the PID in a enclosure with recept. To use I plug toaster oven into recept, set toaster oven to max temp, and allow PID to control oven. The TC is mounted in rear of toaster oven with tip of TC just about over center of where blades lay while tempering. The convection fan cycles on-off with elements in oven at demand of PID.

Ordered a convection oven this morning and a thermocouple. Figured the first step would be to see how much the oven temps swing out of the box and probably make it full PID next month. Thanks for the help everyone!

This was my solution. I insulated with 1/2" Kao Wool with rigidizer to keep wool inside oven from flaking. It is 12-1/2" w, 11-1/2" d and 8" high. I bought the oven at a tag sale for 15 bucks, PID kit was 14 or 15. I think all toll after buying some miscellaneous things I'm into this for around $60 - $65. I have about $80 total into it but this was because it was a design as I build project and I changed some things as I went. Works GREAT holds + or - 2Deg. I did because of space constraints. If I had the room I think I would have used a cheap or free Craigslist stove with PID.
