Smooth contact wheel for surface grinder converson?

I have all the parts needed to convert my surface grinder to belts but was waiting on the contact wheel. I ordered a 1in wide , 6in diameter wheel which arrived today. The only thing is I ordered it grooved and it came smooth. The durometer is 95. I will be running 1X42 blaze belts on it.

So should I send it back or can I use it smooth? Will it give me a smoother cut than serrated or will it cut hotter? I'm not looking to hog material off. I designed the setup so I can put the stone back on if I choose to to hog material and then put the contact wheel on for finishing.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

You can hog WAY faster with a belt than a stone.

I built mine that way too, since I had spare hubs, and haven't switched yet.

It's not uncommon to take .005 to .010 off a whack, with .100 cross feed.
.025 to .030 comes off in nothing flat...

Send it back, and get it serrated, the couple of guys I have talked to with smooth wheels get nowhere near the results I get.

My wheel initially came unserrated too, even though I ordered serrated.

I sent it back, they fixed it up, I have never looked back.

When I orderd mine I orderd a smooth wheel because I didn't know any better, I need a serrated one because I can't hog off material any faster than I could with a hard wheel. Live and learn.
