Quick change die holders for Coal Ironworks 12 ton press

Ken H and I have been collaborating behind the scenes on some quick change die holders for the 12 ton press since we each have one. Here is my version. I made these out of stuff from my materials storage pile so they are a little rough looking but they will work. No jokes about my welding.

That will work nicely. How do you plan to hold the dies in the holder during use? My quick change dies don't as yet have a way to hold the dies in during use and they tend to slide out, especially the bottom die when sliding the billet toward me during presses.

For the bottom holder it would work to drill a hole in front of each "L" bracket to drop a pin in to hold die in place. Is your QC base 2" wide? If so, there might be room on it to drill a hole in top QC holder for a pin to hold die in place during use. The top die isn't near the problem sliding out as the bottom die is.

Good job.

Well, I after talking to Mr. Ed I was hoping to not have to put anything in place to hold them. I guess after a few trials I will come up with something. If I were to do this again I would make them 6x2 instead of 5x1.5. The bolts are too close to the L brackets for sure on mine. I really have to repent for my language when I was putting them in the press.

Chris, those look good. Had we thought of that before I welded my holders to the press I think I'd used that method myself. Here's what I did to hold dies in place. Just finished a bit ago and haven't cleaned it up yet. Still got to add a small chain to each pin so they don't get lost and to give something to pull pins from holes (nuts) that won't be so hot. Those dies get HOT in use.

All in hindsight I would have cut the "L" bracket longer so all it needed was to drill a hole and drop a pin in. The top holder is the same, but with short bolts used for pins.

That will work fine. What did you do for the other side stop? Did you just weld a piece to the press like the sides?
