Post Vise

Awesome, you did a great job. Yours looks more robust than mine! I haven't got mine set up yet. It took me over a year of looking before I was able to close the deal on one. Here is mine.

Aw you two make me sick! :p:DYou can't find one around here for less than $250.00, and those are the ones that might as well be sold for scrap iron. When I first started looking for one back in 2000, I missed a Colombian that sold for $110.00. After seeing what that one sold for I thought, won't be long and I will find one. Lets see this is 2018, you do the math. I see them all the time up around the Great lakes area and the farm belt selling for a decent price but, not around here!!

I would love to find one like my father had when I was a kid. I believe it was a six inch jaw or maybe eight. It also had a handle that was about 3/4" or 1" diameter! He had it set up on the end of his work bench and made a hook from all thread that went thru the bench and the outside wall the bench sit against. You could do anything on it and never have to worry about it moving even a little bit!!

See this one, it has the large diameter handle. You just don't see them very often!

I am not sure what make those with the heavy handles were! Alas I am still looking.

Good finds both of you!!!

This is one that the blacksmith instructor (his personal vise) used in the smithing class I took in Virginia. This is the condition he found it in - pristine. A fine example of American craftsmanship back in the day.

Opaul when manufacturers started planned obsolescence, that is where everything went bad!! We use to make things in this country to last!!!

That pic shows the only one things that was usually abused is the handle. A cheater bar or hammer done that damage and about the only other thing that went wrong with them is some moron beating on the jaws with a sledge hammer. The jaws will take a lot of abuse but they can be chipped and cracked!!

They are getting harder to find though!! You can bet, if it is advertised as an Antique Vice the price just went up, by $200 0r $300, before the seller ads anything else into it!!

Wouldn't you know as soon as I said these don't come up often............look at this. I might try to get it if it's still available.

Aw, can't win them all!!! When they come up at a decent price, "it's kinda like waving a steak in front of my hound", its gone!!:D

Yeah, no doubt. This is the only local one I've seen for sale. You can tell on mine that the screw box is not original, but the screw threads are in great shape. I need to secure the posts on the screw box, but it works great.
