Making wood "gripier"

Large knife with a rough sanded walnut handle...
The wood is integral to the knife design so I would rather not change it, but its a bit slick.
Ive considerd checkering the wood for more grip.

What else can be done?

TruOil. Even linseed oil helps. Think of the rifle stocks you’ve held. You’d think any finish would make wood slippery, but it doesn’t. TruOil finish actually gets surprisingly grippy with wet hands, which is why I use it on kitchen knives.
