Confederate D-guard Bowie

First one of these I've made; just off the bench. Confederate civil war D-guard bowie. Blade out of A2 steel, Rc58, with brass back. Mild steel guard, cold blued, brass skull cracker. American walnut handle with leather cushion on either end. The clip is sharp, too.

What is the purpose of the brass back? Is it just for looks? The knife looks great, and there's a weapon on every side!
 
it's a "skull cracker". just another way to make the weapon more effective (if it was going to be used for warfare).
