    perfect plunges

Thank you, Laurence. It is very clear to me now. Hi, Mike, I actually bought a file guide from Big Boss and copied his unit inlaid with a 3mm x 8mm x 60mm carbide. I will try both ways for my futre perfect plunge lines. :-) Thank you both.

    perfect plunges

Hi, Laurence, I too have the same problem. When you said "round the shoulders", do you mean rounding the shoulders of the sanding belt by breaking them with Crock stick? Or there are two different steps. To what degree do I break the sides? ( With the platen off, I assume?) The method you...

to grind or not to grind.....

I do not quite understand your question, Mike. The blade is roughtly 3" long, 1/8" thick, 7/8" wide. Do you not grind the cutting edge at all? After done by Peters for heat treating, then start grinding the edge from 1/8" thick? Or do you grind the edge to a certain thickness before heat...

    No Weld Grinder question.

Should I go for the variable speed or start with 3-step-pulley ( or 4-step-pulley) ? I can get a 1750 rpm and 1 1/2 hp motor to reduce the speed to about 875rpm ( or 700 rpm) by using step pulleys. Does 875 rpm or 700 rpm "adequate" ? If either one of the speed is acceptable, then when will...

Elmax Stainless 9.5" Chef knife/240mm Gyuto

Randy, Thank you for spending the time answering my question in detail. I have one small Elmax knife, and I used it as screw driver a couple times in emergency without damaging it. I do plan to make Elmax kitchen knives. I like thin thin kitchen knives. Thanks so much again, Randy.

    Blade Design

Hi, Professor, What is the purpose of the ricasso? Does a knife fuction differently with or without a ricasso? Do you have to have a trianle shape guard for a knife without a ricasso? In your posting above, would then the guard hitting the sharpeing stone instead of ricasso? Thanks...

What are the parameters for a "hunter"?

Hi, Travis, What primary bevel will you flat grind for each of (1) 7 1/2" OVL, 5/32" thick, 1" wide, (2) 7 1/2" OVL, 5/32" thick, 1 1/4" wide, hunter knife? What kind of edge will they be? I am still learning how to make knives. Quite often made knives either too thick or too thin. What...
