    Latest acquisition. 100lb hammer

Dang! That was quite the informative response. There's lots of things to take into consideration dealing with one of these big hammers. Fortunately I know a guy that has plenty of experience with large hammers. He is a wealth of knowledge. I appreciate all input cause I need all the help I can get.

    Just another slippie.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'm always striving to improve with each and every one.

25lb Little Giant followed me home.

Thanks for the useful info Ed. I got the Fifty running today. Had it flinging grease/oil everywhere. Has the original motor as far as I could tell. Had to tear it down because it wouldn't run. Needs new brushes. I'm a rancher so improvising is what I do best. I super glued match sticks to the...

    Just another slippie.

:nothing:I only built three knives all winter. This being last. Damascus by me under the guidance of someone that knows considerably more than I do. Great experience. I'm pretty optimistic that I'll be set up to forge in my own shop by next winter.

25lb Little Giant followed me home.

Got the 50lb hammer home. Called Little Giant to get the age on it. 1946 model. Turns out I'm the second owner. Delivered new to the man whose shop I got it out of. An old blacksmith now deceased. It's new home is only seven miles from its original home. Pretty happy to gather up both machines...

    Does anybody?

Most sewing machines marketed for leather these days are no more than glorified canvas sewing machines. A true leather stitcher is a needle feed machine without feed dogs. That way you don't mark the leather. I'm a saddle maker also. I have three different harness stitchers in my shop. All...

Thanks for the contact info. I have little experience with these so any advice will help.

25lb Little Giant followed me home.

Thanks for the input Ed. I'm treating it like my antique harness stitchers. Oil them very generously. That's what I just did. Trust me it's dripping oil again.

25lb Little Giant followed me home.

Gave this thing a thorough bath with the steamer today. Now I can see what I have. Fair amount on green paint under all that grease and grim. Everything seams pretty tight and nothing hinky looking. Pulled the three phase motor off and found an old motor in the back of the shop to serve as its...

25lb Little Giant followed me home.

Not sure if I should admit that I only paid 400 dollars for this. A few days ago a friend told me that the fire department in a neigboring town was going to auction of some donated items from an old blacksmith shop. He had contacted the person in charge and was informed that there was going to...

    Let's see your forging presses.

Good deal we finally got another press picture. The cylinder I'm standing on is just an example of the size of cylinders I found in that yard. I'm waiting for the snow to go off so I can get a good look at the cylinders they have. That one just happened to be sticking out the edge of the of the...

    Let's see your forging presses.

3phase, 10 hp motor, dual stage pumps, 3000 psi. The frame is my biggest concern right now. Fortunately I have a brother that is a heck of a good welder fabricator. I wouldn't trust my own welds on this project. I didn't get to spend a lot of time at the yard where I found the cylinders but I...

    Let's see your forging presses.

This might be overkill. Power unit off of a thousand ton coining press. Just kind of followed me home. And I think I found where big hydraulic cylinders go to die. 40 cents a pound for whichever one I choose. Will this work Ed?

    Let's see your forging presses.

I have seen hydraulic lines a couple of times with pin hole leaks. It was from the security of an enclosed cab tractor. A line on a hay feeder had a small hole in it and would shoot hydraulic fluid 30 feet each time you hit the lever. Not sure what it would do to a person directly in its path...

    Let's see your forging presses.

Thanks again Ed. I was recently in Miles City, Montana learning the process of forging damascus. I can see what you mean by press for precision and hammer for speed. I was constantly going from one to the other. That's the reason I wish to build the press. My hammer I was fortunate on in the...

    Let's see your forging presses.

Thanks Ed. Why C frame? I was going to shoot for maybe 30 ton. Is 80 ton hard on your dies? Don't get me wrong I would love to run off with your press. What size of H beam is that? Any other design requirements? I was going to start this project by seeing what I could source for material at a...

    Let's see your forging presses.

Gathering up tools to start making Damascus. 50lb Little Giant found and bought. Now I am in need of a press. Seems to be a shortage of pictures on the Internet. I am interested in the various designs and pros and cons of each. Flow rates, motor hp, and cylinder sizes appreciated. I am not sure...

A question for fellow slip joint makers.

I am aware of some of the benifits of relieving the liners. Possibly less friction when opening and closing plus not leaving marks from said operation. Thanks Don.
