"My very first knife" - post up!

There was definitely a little ethanol in the mix. Sadly that was decades ago and over a thousand miles away. It would truly be easier to make another one like it than to try to track down long forgotten high school drinking buddies... :D

"My very first knife" - post up!

As would I! I left it with the guy who's steel and tools I used. I wonder if my memory of it was more flattering or more critical.

    Jigs: Curse or Cure?

Thanks for the words of wisdom! :) You are correct, we should focus on what we do as individuals and strive to be the best we can. I perhaps lost sight of that.

"My very first knife" - post up!

I don't have my first attempt at making a knife, but I can tell you about it. It was a piece of steel bar stock, the kind you find in the rack at a hardware store for fabricating things with a welder. Definitely not high carbon steel of any kind. One of my friends at the time had a party at his...

    Second attempt at pinned bolsters

All is well, thanks! I used 1/8" pins for this knife. There are several threads here that I relied heavily on to learn how to pin bolsters. As for the pin size, I read that you should have at least three pins in the bolsters. Since the bolsters are attached where the profile of the tang is...

    Jigs: Curse or Cure?

I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. To answer you question, I guess it was how the knives were presented. I was under the impression, as was my wife who was with me, that he made the knives entirely himself. If I'm honest, I suppose it's also a bit of jealousy at his success...

    Jigs: Curse or Cure?

As a new knife maker with less than 50 knives under my belt I will relate my experiences with a jig. I dived in with enthusiasm and bought a lot of serious equipment, and had hoped to learn to grind freehand. I first tried for a scandi grind, then a full flat when the scandi was botched. Finally...

Some newbie observations, and a question.

Yeah, the shop size thing requires a lot of creativity at times! You mention surface grinders. I hope to one day try this idea I have for making a "good enough" surface grinder using some drawer glides, magnets, a hinge and an aluminum block and just mounting it under the contact wheel of my...

Some newbie observations, and a question.

Thanks for all the responses! I guess I will have to invest in some industrial quench oil then if I want to do anything in 1095. To answer Kevin's question: I think more than anything it's the hassle of obtaining and storing the industrial stuff. My wife and I are house hunting right now...

Some newbie observations, and a question.

Ok, I have made perhaps 20-30 knives so far. Not sure the exact number. I have been using O1 exclusively. I've been quenching in mineral oil at about 130-140 degrees F. This gets the steel hard as verified by a set of hardness testing files. I also made a few "flint and steel" strikers out of...

    Tooled leather sheath

Thanks! The paracord retention can also just be pulled aside behind the spine of the knife, with the snap still in position to bypass the retention device for times when you might be working on a project that required the knife to be removed and replaced in the sheath frequently.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the compliments.

    Tooled leather sheath

Here's a "step by step" on how I made a sheath for my most recent knife build. Certainly not the only way, and probably not the best. But this might give some folks some ideas to use on their own projects. I recently finished a knife that needs a leather sheath. I wanted to do a bit of...

    Second attempt at pinned bolsters

Thanks guys! Darrin, I'm originally a Louisiana guy myself, born and raised in Metairie so the fleur de lis is no accident. :)

    Second attempt at pinned bolsters

This is my most recent build. 5/32" O1 full flat grind desert ironwood scales 9" OAL, 4.5" blade C360 brass bolsters. I used a taper reamer on the pin holes and reamed them about 2/3 of the depth into the bolsters, then pounded the heck out of them with a hammer. You can just barely...

Forge finish on a stock removal knife?

Here's a picture of the finish applied to a knife using the etching machine pad with no stencil.

Tried something new, removable scales and kydex

Most of the people who have been buying my knives are camping/bushcraft/outdoors people who like to process firewood and do camp crafts with their knives. The tang extension is to protect the scales from impact in case they drive the tip of the knife into some wood by whacking the pommel with a...

Tried something new, removable scales and kydex

Well after making 20 or so Scandi grind knives with glued scales and Loveless bolts I decided to try a flat grind with some standoffs so the scales can be removed (just for kicks). Also this is my first kydex sheath. I followed Boss Dog's youtube videos on making sheaths with the material and...
