Few questions I have while I'm away from home for the week

I'm out of town up here in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the week. I've brought all my reading resources, drafting gear and whatnot, for when I have nothing to do. But I got a couple of things on my mind: one is the fact that I have found an abundant source of thick oil rig cable(theoretical...

What would be the recomended tonage for a hydraulic press?

Semester is finally over and I have an entire summer to work out in the shop. I've been trying a couple of things with my forge the past couple of days, and I have come to the conclusion that everything I have is too big for forging. I've got me a 20ton pump hydraulic press from harbor freight...

Has anyone ever thought of making bevel dies?

In the complete modern blacksmith, there is a jig made using a U shaped leaf spring to hold a top and bottom die on an anvil, allowing the smith to hold both steel and hammer. I was wondering if anyone had ever thought to make bevel dies for use in something like this, mostly just for a concave...

    asdvice on ovenless heat treat

The question I have: what options are available to someone who does not wish to spend 500+ on a heat treat oven just yet? Will a $20 toaster oven work for tempering medium carbon steel blades(1045), or is there a technique you can use with the forge to do it? Thanks for any input T. Hunter...

Has anyone ever heat treated 1045?

1045 heat treating Local steel supply company has 1045 in 2" round stock that I could use for forging some tools(hammers, hardy tools, hot cutting tools). most of the time when people start listing out the simple carbon steels they end em on the low end around 1050, so does 1045 have enough...

need some ideas to refinish my antique anvil

as you can see its kinda rusty and has a couple of gigantic "chips" near the hardy hole, which I have no earthly idea how they could have been made. Anyone know of a good way to knock off all the rust and get it back to a polished finish, and what I could do about the chips?

    Micarta experimentation

Started yesterday working out how to make micarta scales, first test I used 15 layers of fiberglass cloth, set for around 24 hours, which gave me this ugly thing the 15 layers was no where near enough to try allot of shaping with, as its only about 1/8th of an inch thick, though I decided...

does anyone still do diferential hardening with hot fire and cold water anymore?

I'm about to get all of my parts and pieces together and finish up my blacksmithing shop. I want to go about making and treating blades in a more traditional manner: hammering em out, draw filing to sharp and shape, aneal the steel for a couple of nights(long soak in the forge, let cool in...
