    First Hamon

    15N20 rusting

I recently made a set of steak knives out of 15N20 for my brother. Chose 15N20 because I have a simple forge for heat treat and I could find steel thin enough for what I wanted. So I knew 15N20 would not be stainless but these blades rust pretty much on contact with anything mildly acidic. He...

    Advice needed- Crack during Tempering

I tried putting a hamon on knife for the first time and ran into a snaffu while tempering. After tempering the blade cracked at the the choil. Finishing belts

So far I've done a lot of hand sanding to finish my knives, and it looks good, but it takes a lot of time and patience. My question is to those that do a satin machine finish, what do you prefer to use and why? Cork, Felt, Scotchbrite, norax? I have some limitations on my sander where the...

    Ax Sheath

A friend asked me to make him a sheath for his camp ax so he didn't have to worry about it cutting things when he had it in his pack. This is my first ax sheath. It's all 8-10 oz vegetable tanned leather with a single strap and a line 24 snap to hold it all together. I think it turned out...

    Just getting started

This is my first knife, I kept it simple with a pattern similar to some of the Green Rivers I have. It's 5/32" thick 1095. The handle is tiger striped Dymondwood. Pins are 1/4" brass lanyard tubing. It turned out ok, but the blade didn't harden quite as much I was hoping for. After reading...

    Hello from North Dakota

Hi all, I've been a knife addict for years. I've been buying blades and finishing out handles and sheaths for the last couple years when time allows. I just built my own forge and hope to start heat treating some of my own creations soon.
