Need an idea for a forged spear pole material

DeMo thanks for that link! Those look great, especially for the price! I am womdering how the quality is especially with modern drying methods but I imagine those should be as good as you can get for ash. Also I can use those for other projects! If it's just a raw, kiln dried ash pole (I...

Need an idea for a forged spear pole material

John I guess this is technically a pig sticker! My goal in this project is overall toughness/durabilty i'm a fan of overkill. Gary... I was considering a tang style but then I got thinking a pinned socket might be stronger as it doesnt alter the structure of the pole so much... But I would love...

Need an idea for a forged spear pole material

Ok perhaps my strangest question yet :p I'm about to forge a spear head but I don't know what would be good for a pole. I considered oak for strength but it can shatter, I considered waxwood for flex but it can flex too much. I need it too be as tough as possible, hard but not brittle. Doesnt...

Another of my odd steel questions

Interesting I never would have guessed that, but availablity makes sense. AKS 1080+ you say? I'll have to have a look at that!

Another of my odd steel questions

I'm going to make a steel order soon... Really trying to keep costs to a minimum. I noticed Aldos 1095 is less expensive than his 1084. I always considered 1095 slightly superior, you can get a decent hamon with it. Although it seems to require some skill (HT control) to really get the best of...

    Need some 240v electrical advice

    Need some 240v electrical advice

Not sure if this counts as shop talk or heat treating. I want to move my evenheat HT 240v kiln across the shop but there is no outlet. I dont want to open walls. My idea is to take some 3/0 guage cable or larger. Remove the outlet at one end of the room and hardwire the new 55' length into...

    Leather lined kydex

Perfect, thanks leatherman! For the moisture/humidity issue... I was thinking perhaps if the kydex was like a shell or some such thing and the leather liner could be removed and dried (if one had too) my climate is pretty dry (semi desert).

    Comparing damascus

Right on that's just what I was wondering, thank you sir! :)

    Comparing damascus

That makes sense so far... But lets say that in a perfect world where the individual knows what they are doing with the process. Lets say 1084/15N20... Which is likely the the dominant alloy once forged together? I'm basically wondering if the alloy added for contrast more nickel reduces or...

    Leather lined kydex

Hmmmm some very good points! That gives me a few ideas... I want the kydex to add a little more protection but at the same time it seems to me whats the point of protection if it causes damage in the first place. Granted a little scuffing is better than rust... I'll have to think about this...

    Comparing damascus

I will be attempting damascus as some time in the near future and have a quick question. It seems from my research combinations of 1084, 1075, 1095 and so on with something like 15N20 are the most popular. Most talk about the steels forgability and contrast... I can't find a whole lot on...

    Leather lined kydex

I like kydex for it's durability simplicity and ability to make an adjustable friction retention but I don't like how it can wear on a blade. I wan't to make a hybrid sheath with leather lined kydex... From the homework I've done it sounds like nobody does this or thinks it's a good idea...

    1084 or 1095

This week my mother passed away suddenly, so I turned to my best friend the same day and found out she had commited suicide... Now im numb and trying to distract myself by diving back into my work... All my blade steel is gone but for a pile of random scraps... 1084/1095 idk which are which...

    Embarrassing to ask but...

I think those are all great ideas and good advice! Up till now I was living in the middle of nowhere. I only moved to a place that has other people last week. I have tried/trying dating sites online but idk if i'm doing that wrong or what... I just never seem to get replies or messages. Ive...
