AEB – L dry ice question

I am getting ready to do my first heat treatment of AEB – L at home. The commercial heaters have either become too expensive, not confidence or inspiring or they just flat don’t take small orders anymore. I have my 16“ x 4“ x 1“ plates and a long drive for dry ice. I have heard that AEB – L is...

    Oil quenching air hardening steels.

I have seen some folks like Roman Landis say that they oil quench air hardening steels. I am thinking about CPM 3V and maybe later some ALDO AEB-L equivalent. I have both AAA and 50 and I was wondering if you could quench it in 50 that had not been warmed up to perhaps make it a less violent...

    Paracord wrapped handles.

Just a general question. Have paracord wrapped handles fallen out of favor in the custom knife world? I know you still have people who still do stuff that’s closer traditional Japanese style, but have the striders of the world gone away?

    Integral grinding fixture for KMG.

Does anyone make one? I can find the fixtures for other manufacturers, like Feder, Wilmont, Brodbeck, etc. but number for the KMG I would prefer not to have to buy a completely separate machine like the uncle Al device but I’m not sure I’m comfortable trying to build one.

Fattening up a para cord handle

I’m thinking of doing a jimmy fikes inspired piece. The only other time I tried this I discovered that you need to have the thing a little narrower top to bottom to compensate for the diameter of the para cord. The other thing I’m wondering is how do you fat enough to handle a little bit? I know...

So what’s up with these guys, they don’t answer their phone they don’t respond to emails or voice messages. I’m talking about spending $1700 with him and I can’t get a response. finish/blasting question

So how fine do you have to finish hardened steel so that blasting with aluminum oxide media' etc will remove/hide the grinder marks? I have read that with old school rust bluing, a clean 320 grit finish will work without blasting,, but i have seen one guy take a blade up to 600 and hand sanded...

    Opinions on knife.

This is a little balde that I made for myself a few years back. I call it a Sab Francisco bushcrafter because I was inspired a bit by the balde and hanlde shape of the Michael Price and Will and Finck spear point bowies. Stell is 115W8/1.2442. It is a bit heavy because of the Micarta, so I made...

    Coated Stainless: Another Silly Question.

So I have been seeing a number of the "high speed, low drag" type tactical knives for years that are made from stainless super steels like S30V, S35VN, Elmax, etc. The maker/manufacturer picks a very expensive PM stainless steel and then puts a coating on it. Why? Why not pick something that...

    5160 too soft?

I was reading up on the Council Tool Camp Carver axe and noticed that it is 5160 tempered to 55. From what I have read from Larrin's work, 5160 appears to be one of those steels like A2 where you have to "take what the chemistry gives you." Too hard or too soft, not so good. Same with going too...
