I bought this articulating work rest system from Boss Dogs website. It turns everwhich way you can imagine. I just don't use it much. I guess I'm a simple guy. Mine comes with the 1.5" square arm and all the pieces in the pictures. These are around $340 shipped new and mine is almost as new...

Trouble Heat Treating Baker Forge Bronze SanMai

I bought a very expensive piece of Bronze SanMai from Baker Forge. It is made with bronze and 80CRV2. I followed their heat treat instructions to the "T" and I am unable to get it past 50 HRC. I have Paragon Knife Kiln that is very stable. I also have an oil heater for my quench oil with a temp...

    Folding Knife Blade to Fixed...

...anyone ever try this? I bought a huge lot of factory-made folder blades. The price was right, and I know I may never use them. Has anyone ever taken a folder blade and tried to weld or affix a piece of steel to the blade to make a handle?

    Wood Identity

A friend of mine has this old football carved from wood and a display base. It must be 30-40 years old. Here is a picture of the base. Can anyone identify this? He's giving it to me for knife scales...

    How Many Knives at Once...

To all the knife makers here, how many knives do you have in the works at once? I sometimes feel I'm working on too many and maybe neglecting to concentrate enough on each one. This leads me to believe I may put out a better product with less irons in the fire... Thoughts?

WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

I posted in the general area asking if anyone had built a knife like the one in this post. Not much action because it's an odd knife. Almost a "Fantasy" knife or video game prop. I'm going to ga ahead and attempt to make one similar. Here is the picture I was given and a drawing I made. The...

Anyone Ever Tried to Make One of These?

My son in law has put me to task to see if I can pull off this knife. Looking for input from anyone who may have tried this... Steel type and thickness would be my first question. I'm not going to waste any Damascus, that's for sure!

How Long Do You Use a Grinder Belt?

I'm curious as to how long knife makers use their belts. I've noticed I have quite a few belts hanging around that may be past their prime. Generally, when a belt is dead for working steel, I keep it around for a while to work wood and plastics. I'd love to hear from other makers on their...

    Need Some Opinions....

I just finished up this Damascus Skinner with Camel Bone scales. I thought I could get away with white pins, but they are just not a tight enough fit to keep the edges from showing. Should I just leave them alone of possibly drill them out and insert some black ones for contrast?

Sharpening a Knife with a Belly (Inside Curve)

I am working on a couple of knives that have what I would call a belly. I borrowed a picture from another thread here to show what I mean. How do you sharpen the portion inside the black circle? I'm using my grinder to sharpen/form the edge on the blade. Due to the shape, you can't just run the...

    Heat Treat Question

I just heat treated two Alabama Damascus blades. I ramped my oven to 1550 and soaked the blades for 5 minutes. I quenched in AAA oil heated to 120. I finished the cooling in aluminum plates to avoid any warps. I tempered the blades at 350 for one hour and let the oven and blades cool to room...

    The Bowie is Completed!

Not quite as stunning as I'd hoped, but I am happy with it none the less. Alabama Damascus Steel with an 8" blade and 5" handle. Brass guard and stag horn scales with brass pins. Balance point is right where the blade meets the guard. Razor sharp and ready for action...

Affordable White Bone or Expensive Mammoth Ivory?

I'm at the point I need to decide what scales to put on my full tang Damascus Bowie knife. I have a decent set of bone scales and a very nice set of Mammoth Ivory. As you can see in the photos I'm going to lose 1/4" of handle if I go with the Mammoth... The Mammoth Ivory is going to drive...

    Stainless Steel Tool Wrap

For those of you who do your own heat treating do you use 309 or 321 tool wrap? I was using the more expensive 309 that is rated to 2250 degrees because it was all that was in stock when I ordered. The less expensive 321 that is rated to 2000 degrees is available now. I don't heat anything...
