    Start of a new year

Sorry about the image quality. My camera phone was all I had and it sucks. Made a wrap-around tomahawk with a ex-file forge welded in as the cutting edge. I will post more as the project progresses.

    Leaf springs eternal.

Alas, my stash of leaf springs is no more. I have been using several springs that my brother acquired for me off a retired U.S.Army 5-ton truck. These beast were 3/8" thick and 5" wide! Made for some healthy hammerin' I do say. I've posted these photos elsewhere on the web so if you've seen...

    Three for the Boundary Waters

This trio of cutters were made for the sons of a friend of mine. He and his family are all en route as I type to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for a week-long canoe trip. This project has been in the works for most of this sweltering summer but my job has allowed me very little time for knife...

    Walnut, wrought and mystery steel

Finished this knife today. It is forged from a chunk of mystery steel, probably old drill rod or a shaft of some type. I HT'd like I do 5160 and it came out nice. The bolsters are from some wrought iron I bought from a mill demolition in Superior WI. The walnut is scrap from a gunstock...

    Kith ready to ship!

Finally finished the sheath! It took a while to get some leather(a whole nuther story)but it is finished in time for the drawing. I etched the blade in a mild acid solution and stained the wrap handle. I thought it looked too "fleshy" so I tried to darken it. Next time I will stain my...

    Just another day in Hawksburg

I forged out another one. I changed the spike on this particular hawk to please the customer. He wanted a spike but not the normal elongated type I usually hammer out. I forged this spike into a "pointed poll" for lack of a better term. Handle is a simple hickory replacement handle I picked...

    Start of my KITH

Right out of the fire. Forged from a leaf spring off of a retired Army 5-ton truck. I'll treat it as if it is 5160. The knife is annealing right now. May have time tomorrow to contine work on it.

    Hawk with a temporary handle

32 oz ballpeen hammer heads must be approached with a certain..um....insanity, if one is foolish enough to tackle them by hand! I thought beating a 24oz head was punishment. HA! Anyways, enough of me grousing. Wife just tells me to man-up or buy a power hammer. So I sez "I can buy a power...

    Two new spike hawk heads

Here are two hawk head forged from ballpeen hammers. Both customers wanted just the heads. They are doing their own handle work. Thanks for looking Dawgs! The handle on this one is just an old broken one I keep around to test fit the head. I finished tempering it and the colors are just...

    Biggerer, Thickerer, Widerer!

Made this guy for a "knife in the hat" dealio on another thread. I thought the site could use some more "knife po*n" It is forged from a salvaged spring off a very old steam thresher. It started out 3/8" thick by 4" wide and required a whole lot of hammering to get it down to 1/4"...

    Three hawks

Here are three hawks I completed in 2011. The first two are forged from 24 oz ballpeen hammers and the last one from a 1 1/4" bar of 4140

    Spike hawk

Here is a tomahawk I just finished. I have had quite a few requests for hawks from guys at work. Seems the weapon is very popular. I am taking a hiatus from ball peen hawks for a while to focus on other projects I have been neglecting. My arm needs a rest as well. Mashing out a ball peen...

    A Roving Knife

My friend calls this one his "Roving Knife." He wanted something he could take out in the woods with him and to the rennaisance fair as well. This is what I came up with. Forged from a leaf spring with a brass-pinned curly, maple handle. Sheath is copper and leather with a little brass...

    Camp blade with maple handle

I finished this one last weekend. Forged from the last of my reclaimed truck leaf springs. Time to seek out some more. I used a chunk of maple(I think) that in it's former life was scrap from an old pallet. I have been saving it for about 6 years and finally decided to use it(actually I just...

    Workbench plans

OK, time I gave up my 20-year old B&D Workmate and built a real workbench. Does anyone have any suggestions or plans for one they could post or link to? I have been using the Workmate because it is portable and foldable but it has it's limitations and has become very old and rickety. I want...

    Hemp wrapped handle

I thought to try a different material for a handle on this knife. I used some hemp twine I found at Wallyworld. The wrap is over a slice of leather and covered in epoxy. It feels good in the hand and after a hard day's cutting is equipped with a bottle opener to assist the weary owner with...
