CA glue as a finish coat?

So is CA glue better used on woods which do not have a lot of natural oils?

CA glue as a finish coat?

I know finish oil doesn't take the wood where there's glue. The glue needs to be sanded away first. I don't know why I didn't catch that. Maybe I was thinking of all the dust in there, still taking the oil. I'll experiment a little more with this.

CA glue as a finish coat?

I read Jason's link and found where Bruce Bump showed how he used it. It seems like it depends on the kind of wood. The OP in Jason's link was worried about it not taking to oil like I was. I wonder if it doesn't work well on oily woods? I experimented a little today. I'm using Black palm. On...

CA glue as a finish coat?

Yeah I take back what I said about not liking an oil finish. I'm too inexperienced in the matter to say I like or dislike this or that. As with CA glue I need to do some oiled finishes "correctly" to really know. The knife I did was my own. On this one, I did three coats with light sanding. I...

CA glue as a finish coat?

Thanks Jesse. I'll search the tutorials. Thanks folks, I appreciate the help. Hi Bruce, one last thought, Just curious how you've seen it yellow and crack. I'm wondering exposure to water and sunlight?

CA glue as a finish coat?

I don't like just oil as a finish - at least in my own experience on my own knives. But on the other hand, I don't really know what other makers do - how they finish with just oil. I was thinking I wanted a hard durable clear coat of something as a finish - not just oil. But I can experiment...

CA glue as a finish coat?

My understanding is that it penetrates and hardens in the wood - so kind of stabilizing it. When I used it before (once on rosewood) it brought real beauty and depth to the wood grain. I didn't use oil that time. It may not be a good choice for a top coat. I do see some cracking on that peice...

CA glue as a finish coat?

This stuff is harsh! Anyway, oil first then CA glue? or just CA glue? I'm not sure if the wood will take the glue if it's oiled. Thanks for the help

    Handle material

I have some antler I'll want to hollow out, and some dry bone laying around, too. I have some ideas, but I'm sure you'll get to yours before I get to mine. I'll be interested to see what you do as well.

    Little 3-piece hunter...

Beautiful as always John. I like the round spine to flat (clip/swedge?). Different and the first I've seen of it done that way. Question: No epoxy? If I remember right in your 1084 WIPish you mentioned putting hidden pins and no epoxy so that the knife could be taken apart. Is that how you did...

Positives: The butt cap is drilled below the silver brazed nut to receive the all thread which also has the edges knocked off. This was to give me a little extra bite since I was using coarse thread. I'd like to try machine screw threads next time. I had 6-32 but it was too small so I switched...

I can only think of using my vice to get flat. I tend to rock a piece on it's edge if I'm holding it and going back and forth (or even one direction) on sandpaper and barstock. I've had better luck if I'm holding a file or abrasive and the workpeice is held still. btw I'm really frustrated...

building the handle: First time with any kind of ivory. This one was a five dollar piece. I'm doing it for experience and the nostalgia of working with something rare. But any feed back is welcome on this. I knew to keep it cool while working it - go slow and use sharp tools: 1/8 brad point...

I'm glad someone else thought of making these stones, because I was just about to invent them myself. No, honestly Tracy mentioned EDM stones awhile back and I forgot about that until now. I just received some longer length diamond files I ordered from Jantz. It's the set of five they sell...

Here are some better grinds. The 4" with brass has been my practice blade. I wanted to try a deeper swedge than my last one I finished. But I decided on more mild swedges on the other two. I decided to try it out with my bench grinder. I cleaned it up with medium diamond files, then 240 then...
