    Constructive criticism and thoughts please!

I would echo Chris' thoughts mostly. I would also add that as a beginner you might do yourself a favor and tone it back on size. That's a really big blade for #3. I would recommend getting really good at 7"-8" hunters and drop points before tackling the big ones. I'm no expert either, but even...

I'm seriously considering giving up knife making

I stop and start all the time. I've went for 6 months without making a knife and then made 10 at once. Like most of you guys, I'm beyond busy, keep way to many irons in the fire! Just step away for a little while, get caught up on other things, your skills don't perish that fast. Oh, and most...

    Big "Howdy" from Oklahoma.

Theres a pretty good knife club/organization in central ok. http://theknifegroup.com/site/ they have get togethers and small shows. Funny, I'm in okc right now for work, but I live just over the border in Arkansas.

    304 bolsters?

You can do 304, I have. It is a pain to drill. I got some pin stock from Enco I think, but they're gone now. This knife below has 304 bolsters.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

Ha! No, I made that before YouTube even existed, lol.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

I usually drill a few holes in my tangs too. Weight reduction and might help glue up. Since I didn't make this one, it just went back as it was. My cabinet is homemade, I'm sure you can make one for next to nothing.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

I'm probably more like the king of cheapskate!

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

I found a couple things that could be better and the maker already knew about them mostly. He's interested in doing a production run once he makes a couple small changes. I really like it, very position-able.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

Yeah, it is. It looks kind of weird I guess, but it works great if you have a beard. Of course there's a video for it, lol....

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

A vid I just finished, fixing a knife for a customer. Do any of you take on repairs too? I really don't like doing repairs on someone else's work, but I've done it a few times. I need to just say no! I usually have no idea what to charge for repairs, but anyway, here's how I did this one...

    Top three mistakes rookies make,,,

I think a big mistake I see online is overconfidence. You see guys trying to sell their 3rd or 4th knife with 80 grit grind lines and rough filework for $500. Half of them look like a movie prop from Mad Max. If you're new, don't be ashamed to to say so and be humble. A lot of those guys dont...

Which contact wheel, if you could only have one?

I think it's mainly the look you're after. If you want big broad hollow grinds that almost look like flat grinds, I'd say 10" or bigger. If you're building Loveless hunters, a 4" or 5" wheel will give that look. If you're making razors, maybe even smaller.

    Check your platen

Agree. I think the only way the glass will break is if you slam a tool rest into it on accident. I put out a youtube video on installing mine a long time ago and I put a little shelf to support the bottom edge just in case the jb weld let go. If I were to do it again, don't think I'd even bother...

    Check your platen

My glass has some weird texture or ripples forming in it. Odd thing is, its above where the contact usually occurs. Mainly in the top couple inches. It makes me think maybe the belt is catching grit and bringing it around. Or, maybe the belt is bunching up right before the blade. Any of you...

What's going on in your shop?

Have you tried any antler or bone? I wanted to try some laser scrimshaw on bone. And, what will it do with micarta or g10? Kydex? I've been daydreaming about all kinds of stuff.

What's going on in your shop?

Wow, didn't know you had a laser! I've been looking at them for past couple months, can't decide. I was thinking about trying one of those 50w Ebay ones. Which one are you using?

Making a short sword/wakizashi build along.

The curve coming out really surprised me. I would have thought that would only happen on an edge quench, but maybe not. I would have guessed Peters did a full quench, not an edge. No warps?

    Another "what wood" thread

Here's a quote from a wood page: Osage Orange contains a water-soluble yellow dye, so putting shavings into water will turn the water yellow. Maybe it doesn't sink, I was thinking it did. Looks like specific gravity is 0.86, so guess not. Almost would sink, but it would have to 1 or higher to...

    Another "what wood" thread

Bodark or persimmon are the densest woods in my area and I think they both will sink. Bodark has very bright, yellowish sawdust for sure. It also ages to really nice brown color too after exposure to sunlight or heat.

    Another "what wood" thread

If the dust is yellow, I'd say Osage orange. Or, as they say in Arkansas, Bodark.
