Pin location? WNIP

Back in the shop/garage after a winter illness. 45 degrees out there today. I’ll take it. So I was going to put a lanyard on this knife but I think I may have drilled the hole too close and worry about the wood breaking. So I did I make the two other larger holes for two pins if I need to. I could also put the lanyard hole on the top corner, but it just doesn’t seem like it will look good. I don’t know why. Also would you call this a hunter, a bushcraft? 8 inch length . Actually I added a red line where the handle will probably be, now I am wondering if I need to move the front pin up a little towards the ricasso.07916BE0-7E0A-45CA-9A64-584B86E80D5B.jpeg

I agree with the other guys. Your pin locations will be fine. I've seen a lot of knives with the lanyard in the top. With the shape of your handle I would actually prefer it there. That's gonna be a nice knife. Keep us posted on the progress.

Great thanks John and all. I will add that hole.
mill hear treat it tomorrow. I am a little concerned because I was running out of edge and still need to go to at least 400before acid etch the Damascus.

WNIP Work not in Progress. Well I ruined another one. Just like I thought I was getting too close to the edge. After heat treat I tried to give I final sanding and started chasing my tail. Fighting the bevel lines, burning the edge. My ratio is going down to about 1:4 knives completed. So I’m quitting knife making, it’s too discouraging. I don’t need this, so never again. ...... ok I’m back, think I’m going to do a small knife. that seems to be my niche.

Hate to hear that. Whenever I feel like I'm "chasing my tail" I stop and go do something else. I've ruined stuff too by not listening to that voice in my head that says "hey doofus, don't do that." Sometimes when I'm struggling with something I lay it down and come back to it later. More often than not the thing that was giving me problems goes as smooth as silk. I don't understand it but it works.

I think my issue , or at least one of them, is getting a proper angle on my jig. I feel like I am always winging it. Today I did a small skinner and the angle and bevel came out great. Plus it’s a small knife so I am in my comfort zone. I still have a little more than a dime size edge going into heat treat.

I have found that when I start having problems with grinding, the best thing to do is go get a fresh belt.
Maybe it's the three minute break, maybe it's refocusing my thoughts, maybe it's the fresh abrasive, but things almost always get better.

I purchased a jig but never used it. Although I do most of my grinding now free hand., in the beginning I used the tool rest to help grind the blade. I let the spine ride on the tool rest. I still do from time to time. I still lose a grind from time to time though. Hate it when that happens.

I don’t think I will ever get to free hand. I don’t think I make enough knives. I think i am having success with the little skinner I am making now. I’m not going to do a WIP. That seems to jinx me. Basically it will be a skinner with Purple Heart handle and red liners. A red mosaic pin to match and a lanyard hole. It will have an acid wash finish with the exception of the bevel. That will probably be a 400 grit. What could go wrong? I did my bevel already and I am happy with it. I’m gluing up the scales and liners now. I will post when I’m done.

I always do the new belt. It does help, but not this time. I only have a 2x42 . I feel like I need a new belt for each bevel.
