W2, Koa and a little damascus, a hunter this time...

Absolutely phenomenal. By the way, that curled chunk of steel next to the blade is screaming to have an edge put on it and used as a nostalgia straight razor of sorts. :)

    wood handel oils ?

I use tung oil quite a bit, but never as a finish; more as a stain. I guess I never considered using it as a final finish. CA finishes seem to be my favorite for now. I've got a request for a dyed/stained GREEN colored handle on the knife I'm producing for a friend, and that's become a mess...

    Sharpening Help?

I too have sharpening woes, especially when cutting in my edges. I free hand them on my 1x30 sander until they are really close, then do the final 'cuts' with my pull through carbide sharpening tool. The issue I'm having is that I have some places on the edge that are RAZOR sharp, and some...

    Forge burner location

Thank you Ed. I thought I remember reading something like that to avoid a hotspot, so the flame swirls around, but I couldn't remember where I read it. Half these sites I'm reading with great ideas claim I can quench in used motor oil, and I'd rather take your word for it over the weekend...

    Forge burner location

I'm building my forge tomorrow! Kaowool outer layer, thin layer of 3000° furnace cement, and a layer of plistix once I order some from Wayne. Quick question, where do I put my burner? It'll be 8" long, 4" diameter. Right in the middle of the 8" section, or more near the rear? Also, does...

So I guess you can say things are starting to get serious...

Perfect. Thank you sir! Have you tried the sodium silicate/perlite combo over the clay/vermiculite method? Yours is probably easier and cheaper, but if I can get slightly more bang for my buck spending a few dollars more, I can do that. The coffee can forges and smelters are pretty...

So I guess you can say things are starting to get serious...

Gotcha on the wheels. He suggested I just use his then glue rubber inner tube inside. I doubt its ability to hold up, but who knows. Probably better to just buy them. Lol. My dad's just as much into saving money as I am. In regards to the forge, I'd like to get as large of a hole as possible...

So I guess you can say things are starting to get serious...

It's been recommended to me by another member here to use a freon tank with the atlas burner. I've got Kaowool, and was going to use a mix of clay, vermiculite, and plistix if I can find it. I was going to go all out with Kast o Lite, etc, but honesty I can't afford it right now and I seriously...

So I guess you can say things are starting to get serious...

I discovered accidentally that my atlas mini-forge burner is coming for my birthday on October 6th so that I can make my own forge. Furthermore, I decided to put up one of my handguns for sale and build myself a KMG. I've found the free plans online, so I guess it's time to make it happen...

    Burning on my first handle...

Just got into reading and watching some of the major videos. I totally see why J. Doyle posted the "Don't be this guy" video. Minus the video games and the name calling, I was pretty much that guy. J.D. only lives about 20 minutes from me. Lol

Newbie mistake: Why using unknown steels is bad.

I'll probably be working with 1080 and 5160 mostly (provided I can temper them in my home oven) until I can justify getting a more elaborate setup. Maybe I'll be able to temper in my forge, we'll see. I'll be making a freon forge similar to the one George Brackett recommended to me. Very nice...

Newbie mistake: Why using unknown steels is bad.

I'll be doing all of my tempering in my home oven I think unless there's reason for me specifically not to. Was planning on just using the forge for quenching and forging.

    My new knife-like object

Thank you! For it only being my forth knife, I'm pretty proud of it. I've been getting a lot of requests for functional fantasy style blades now that people have seen my work, so I guess I'm going to have a steep learning curve. I've got a back order already of 4 blades, and only do this as a...

    Need Osage orange for Handle

Here's some Osage orange contrast I did. Butane pencil torches are your friend.

    My new knife-like object

Here's the big brother to the other knife like object I posted in my "my first knife" thread. It's not perfect, but it's kinda cool. Though the edge is straight, the plunge line is deeper on one side than the other, and I'm not sure how to fix that. The 'waves' in the blade were not...
