forging video

Hi,
just thought i would share a little video i made at the office last week. you are watching the forging of a fixed outer race, the bell is 1/2 of a CV joint, the stem, after machining, is what drives your wheel. the steel is high purity 1045 or 1050 that contains about 1%chromium. the raw billet is leaving a 800kw induction heater that takes the 2" diameter 4 pound billet from room temperature to 1800F in about 60sec. this job is using 4 punch/die stations with about 300 tons of force per station. About 25 finished parts leave the press each minute. we are able to hold dimensional tolerances of +/-1mm or less.
I asked our head engineer why forging? forging is the most economical way to make precision parts with repeatability and tight dimensional tolerances.

I like those little hands picking up the hot pieces {g}

Good video - thanks for posting.

we call them fingers. in this press the parts transfer system is mechanical/pneumatic. the other presses here are mechanical/electric.
