San Mai Damascus WIP

PMARTINKNIVES

Well-Known Member
I'm making a Blackfoot Dagger using a Bear jaw handle for my own collection and decided to do a WIP.
The outer pieces are 120 layer Damascus I previously made and the core steel is 52100, this project requires the tang to be off center to accommodate the jaw bone.
Anyway, here a few pictures of the various steps to produce this blade. More to come, thanks for taking a look.

A few more pictures

I realized I didn't put up a photo of the patterning of the billet, so here are a few more including the finished blade ready for heat treat.

All the steels in this mix will HT at 1550 degrees.
Even when I use a hardenable stainless(12c27, 410, 416) over a tool steel core, I still HT at the temperature required to harden the core steel. Hope this helps,

Peter

How did you end up cutting the pattern in? The grooves look ground, but it's hard to tell. Either way, it turned out nice.

The End Results

Finished up my Blackfoot Dag, the ferrule is copper colored with heat. Thanks for following the process.
