    Handle Material? :)

I look forward to shed season all year, On Wednesday I went shed hunting and found 5 sheds including the first brown shed for the season. It was a big 7 point bull. I ran back out today to see if I could find the other side. My previous record for elk sheds was 7 in one day. Not that...

    My Damascus Fighter

Not wanting to get too far ahead on the KITH, I decided to make a similar knife, only out of Damascus. I bought a 3x15" piece of Alabama Buckshot Damascus. I decided to do the guard and Blade from the same material. There was enough to do this Blade, the guard and one more knife...

    Just got the mail...

I've been trying to find a decent piece of Damascus for a while now. I had my heart set on a feather pattern, but have not found any. The only place I could even find selling it had a very loose pattern that looked nothing like the feather I wanted. Plus they wanted 250$ + for a not very...

Well, I've checked into this forum for several days and it hasn't got much going on, so,...I'll post something. Here is a knife I am making for a KITH. The KITH theme is "Fighter" (Still room and time for more in the KITH if anyone is so inclined) I wanted to make a C guard Fighter. Here is...

Ever See a Handle that Needed a Knife?

I have a friend who was telling me about some of the knife making supplies he put in storage 15 years ago and never used. I asked him to dig them out and among the various and sundry items was a Cape Buffalo horn. He had cut up the bases to make scales, (started but never finished) and there...

    A Hunter...they said.

I had a couple people ask me to make knives for them and gave me only the words, "hunting knife" to go by. Here is the first one. I made it according to the general size and shape of knife I like to use for General hunting use. A little bigger than an EDC but not too big. The initial...

Anyone else find 1084 prone to warp?

I have 5 smaller knives in the works and 2 of them I promised to have ready for Valentines day. So I got all 5 ready for heat treat. Did 3 normalization cycles. Quenched the first one, no problems. Quenched the second (the only one that was Hollow ground) And it warped all to heck. I threw...

    I'm a Fighter...

Well, I hope this one says "I'm a Fighter"! I looked at about 50 "fighters" and took what I liked and started one. here it is so far. Rough fitting of handle. Rough grind of Blade done. Will probably heat treat tomorrow. How am I doing so far? Does it say "Fighter"?

Can this Hamon be improved? Or leave it alone?

Can I improve this Hamon by doing another etch with vinegar? It has been etched with diluted ferric chloride and polished with 000 steel wool 5 times. I like it a lot. But it doesn't have that ashy appearance I see in some Hamon lines. This is Aldo's 1084. Can I improve it or should I leave...

I hope to finish this today

Lots more sanding needed but I might get it done. I think I'll call it 12 inches of persuasion. lol The end caps make it heavier than I thought, I think it will need to be a bedside knife cause I don't want to carry it lol. So Far...

    A father son Pair.

Got a request from My Sysco rep for a knife for him and his son. Here they are, he is coming to pick them up in the morning so I just finished them up. Can you tell I had a day off? :) Plus it looks like my house is SOLD and I have to move into a rental and I don't know how...

    I can't Figure It Out.

I can't figure out why I'm so enamored with Bowie knives right now. In all honesty they serve no practical purpose when it comes to what I actually use a knife for. There are certainly more practical hunting knives and I would probably never use one for that.. I carry a Small EDC folder for...

    Finished another...

I have several blades getting close to being ready for handles so I'll be finishing a few here in the next few days. But here is one I finished this morning, Another piece of wood I bought from Jdale. I forgot what it was called. I think stabilized Maple Burl? Anyway here it is. I...

    Interim WIP

I'm waiting for handle material so most of my knives are on hold for a few more days. So I started another. In This case, I made a knife to fit a piece of wood as opposed to the other way around. Here it is so far. With each knife I make, I like to try something different. The holes in the...

    Why "Used" oil?

In all the discussions about quenchants, Motor oil is inevitably thrown into the discussion because, well, that is what some people have available to use. But the suggestion is always "USED" motor oil. Now, I do not use Motor oil but I do use Canola oil. I run a restaurant and have access to...

    This is My WIP

Probably better here where I can make updates. Well, I was looking at the 2012 Bowie contest and just knew I would have to give one a try. I have done mostly smaller knives and this one, although not big by Bowie standards (probably not even medium) is by far the largest I have attempted. I...

My First attempt at a Hammon...

Well, I thought before I tried to do a hammon on the large Bowie I'm working on, I Should probably try it on something first. So I decided to risk the Blade I did the file work on the handle. I coated with a thin layer of furnace cement diluted with water. Then coated the blade and spine with...

I bit off a huge chunk...

Well, I was looking at the 2012 Bowie contest and just knew I would have to give one a try. I have done mostly smaller knives and this one, although not big by Bowie standards (probably not even medium) is by far the largest I have attempted. I decided to do it with a leaf spring so I wouldn't...
