View Full Version : Axis Antler

I've got lots of axis antler from a knife-for-antler trade with a guy who owns an exotics ranch and wanted to clear his garage of several years worth of sheds. Axis looks great even though it doesn't have quite the texture that elk does, but it is very dense with almost no pith and looks like ivory if all of the ridges are ground away (should you happen to want to do that...). I've got a couple of small fallow antlers too, which isn't much for knife work (too pithy) but could have other uses. I'm willing to trade for other handle materials, especially for higher quality scales and blocks of figured wood. Black micarta or an etcher would also be great. I might also be willing to trade for anything else knifemaking related you might think of, so you might as well ask. I have all different sizes and can trade for pieces or whole antlers. The few pieces on the bottom are pretty representative of most of the pile. If you have particular sizes in mind I'm happy to sort and see what I have.

Hey Travis, I've got a couple blocks of nice birdseye bocote, couple blocks of purple heart, some osage orange, and a couple blocks of rattlesnake sycamore. Also have a piece of 304 stainless 1/4"x2"x approx. 36" (can get exact length if needed), for bolsters & guards. Let me know what you think.

Got some treated red wood burl scales some 52100 slugs and billetts some L-6 bandsaw blades and maybe some other stuff?

I'll work on getting some pictures tomorrow. I've been looking for wrought iron, acutally, so that sounds great. Treated redwood burl too. PM me and we can work something out. Also, the only reference I have for valuing this stuff are the prices on Texas Knifemaker Supply, which seem a little high but may provide a ballpark.

I'm wrought ironed out now, and should have enough of that and stainless to last me for years. Thanks for the responses so far. After setting aside some for myself (of course!) and all that I've traded so far, I've still got 18 full sized antlers to trade and a little more small stuff than that. Other bar stock or sheet stock (copper or nickel silver especially) or mosaic pins or any kind of good handle material would be welcome trades, as would an etcher or whatever you might think of that I might need. Whatever you have that you want to trade is worth asking about, because it might be something I just hadn't thought of yet. ;)

Just got the axis antler today. If anyone is thinking about getting some of this from Travis, it is very nice. Super solid with almost no pith just as advertised. Thanks Travis!2thumbs

Glad y'all are all happy with it! This swap thing has potentially revolutionized my knifemaking, providing materials that I'd not have had the capital to acquire for several more years. I REALLY appreciate everyone's participation, and Knifedogs for the opportunity. I've still got 5 or 6 larger antlers left, but the supply is dwindling.

If anyone has been hesitating, now is the time. I've got about enough left for one more trade before my excess supply is gone. FWIW, this swap thing has completely changed my knifemaking for the better, providing supplies i'd never have been able to justify buying at this point. I hope the axis has been even half as useful and gratefully recieved!

Hey Travis,

I agree. Trading materials has not only grown my capacities and stock, it has increase my social wealth by leaps and bounds too! Well, maybe that's somewhat questionable when it comes to knowing and trading with IG though. tug2

All the best, Phil

Got mine in, sweet. I am going to dye some and just stabilize some in clear. A friend is telling me it will look like ivory when done.2thumbs

I've thought about dyeing it myself, because it comes off the buck pretty white and I like a little more color. Let me know how it goes.

Sorry about that. I thought I had replied to everyone, but with 9 swaps I guess I missed one. It came in last week, and I'm looking forward to putting it to good use. Nice looking knives you've been posting recently, BTW.

Travis,

Do you have any left to trade? If so, are you interested in some curly maple? I have hard sugar maple, not the soft silver or big leaf that a lot of people seem to be selling. I have blocks big enough for large bowies and possibly long enough for hawk handles, if you're into that.

Let me know,

Nathan

I've got a little left, but nothing like before. I think I traded away something like 50 full sized antlers! I have maybe 4 or 5 left I'd be willing to trade. Erin, PM replied. smgtino, PM me with details about how much you need and what you've got to trade and we can maybe work something out.

Delbert, I ended up with a Maker's Mark 150. Thanks for the offer though. I might be interested in a damascus billet, but I'm not sure I've got enough antler for that.
