Are you planning any upgrades for the above, like you did for the 1" X 42"??????
I recommend to my students to get the 2" X 42" for their first grinder. They use a 1" X 42" belt on it to do handle work.
Thanks IG

IG I have one. OK the tention doesn't hold well. The platen needs to be redesigned. needs flat edged not round. The platen is to wide needs to be 2" wide. Tracing isn't bad but need a better way to adjust. A knob would be great. Don't get me wrong but just a few in minor improvements and it wouldn't be bad. It is under powered but I have ground knives on it. Hope that helps.

Maybe making a rubber contact wheel to replace the aluminum one on the bottom would be really nice. It might help on the bouncing when using higher grit belts.

Frank you are right about the bounce. If that fixed it I would be all for it.

That is what we use in our sharpening business, I agree that the platen is to wide. I have a hard time keeping the belts on track.
I would like to upgrade to a 2X72 machine at some point, I am sure the belts last longer and run cooler then the 42"

Ok sounds like we have some definite issues. I will see if i can find one around if not i will see about ordering one and seeing what i can do. As far as the rubber wheels are concerned unless there was a big demand it would not be very cheap to make wheels and get them rubber coated on a small lot basis, but i can look into it.

I have one of these and to cure the wide platen problem, I epoxied a 2" wide piece of A2 on it and this problem was solved. The platen is still flimsy and can get out of square when a lot of pressure is applied. A sturdy platen is needed. Also I cut the piece of work rest off that reached around the side where the belts are changed and leave off the guard. It is not needed and now I don't have to remove the rest every time I change the belts. I also replaced the tracking bolt with one that was longer with a jam nut. Now I can just spin it with a wrench. It would be nice if I had a big knob on it though. I would also like a better contact wheel with rubber on it.
It runs a little too fast but, with some mods it's not to bad for the price.

Is thre a way to knock the bearings out of a rubber contact wheel and make a sleeve so you can make it direct drive. I have seen six inch contact wheels and was wondering about this.

I guess it depends if the contact wheels are made with removable bearings (which I am sure most are) then yes to make a sleeve would be possible.
Any particular wheels you are looking at?
