Lookin good Les! What type of insert are you planning to use in the scal of this one. I really liked the past one you did.
Watch out for those "fat pills". If you're not carefull, you'll be at the PD filling out an application before you know it.

OK, and here we go today... As you can see from the t shirt, some of these are from last night.
Even with the CNC, I still have to clean up the edges..

First thing to get done is some surface grinding. I disk grind one side smooth before I put in on the magnetic check so I have a flat base to work off.

http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/IMG_8725.jpg

http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/IMG_8736.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/IMG_8734.jpg
Work up a little contour on the back spacer.
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/IMG_8752.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/IMG_8751.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/IMG_8749.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/IMG_8755.jpg
I pressed in the insert and it shaved metal off most of the edges, and distorted the titanium frame. Again! It would seem that .0015 clearance is not enough.
So it's time to grind the back back smooth....

I love it when a plan starts to come together! :)
Start out today with grinding the lock face
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8766.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8768.jpg
Mark the blade center for grinding
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8764.jpg
top grind...
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8776.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8771.jpg
getting in the groove...
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8777.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8779.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8780.jpg
Cut a little ramp for the detent
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8783.jpg
Now for the handle... Let's use super conductor for the insert
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8788.jpg
I machined it too tight, when I pressed it into place it distorted the frame and I that was why I had to regrind the back of the frame... Next time I will add even more clearance. I should also mic the endmills too so I can compensate for that.....
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8786.jpg
Now for some contour, time to see if it works like it did in my head...
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8789.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8793.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8791.jpg
http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx324/georgeknives/build%20off%202011/IMG_8794.jpg
Tomorrow I have to turn the stop pin, cut the lock bar and fit the lock. Then I'll be in the home stretch!
The bad part about using the school's shop is that I dont have 24/7 access. Wish my mill wasn't still on the pallet!
Anyway, thanks for looking! :)

Wow Les thats amazing!!!!
Question time, As for the inert what holds it in? is it pressed in or do you glue it also?
I have thought about doing one in wood or other materials.

Thanks guys, that insert is press fit. It pealed metal off the sides as it went in. You would have to melt it out it get it out.
I am hesitant to use wood in a frame like this. I am worried that the expansion and contraction that come with wood would cause nothing but problems. It would have no where to go....
Next I'm gonna do a damascus insert, I want to do some carbon fiber and some lightning strike carbon fiber and some combos then. The sky is the limit! :)
