This is the revised version and as with everything else in design, it's an evolutionary process.

What happened here? I'd love to love to love to see one of these!

If you do a frame lock, I'd sure like to see a flipper on it. I think thumbstuds will become obsolete except for makers who are trying to save on stock costs and don't want to use that extra third of an inch or so!

Forget to add: I really think it's a matter of preference as to what the maker is interested in...not the 0.02 cents for the little piece of steel.

I wasn't saying that to make anyone look cheap or lazy. Just an observation. I was thinking about a post where a fellow was having to decide between a thumb ramp and a finger guard because of the height of the blade. :D Some folks would just do without the flipper before buying a taller piece of stock. I think flippers are easier in general especially with cold hands or gloves.

I remember asking Ken Onion why he still had a flipper on his first folder with a thumb stud, and commented that it seemed like a belt and suspenders. He said he hadn't thought about it but didn't really think he needed both. Some makers say the thumb stud is a blade stop, but there are plenty of Spydercos and flippers without them!

murphda2
01-24-2010, 09:36 PM
Personally, I prefer the thumb disk over the stud or flipper. But, on a solid built and smooth operating knife, I rarely use any of the above.

Tip up too! Yi ha, hurrah! Any idea when these will be in production and how much they will run, Bill?

Don't have the answers to either of those questions yet as these are just the first steps - but I'll keep everyone updated.

Thanks men.

It's just #1 so there are a few items that need to be ironed out but I couldn't be happier with the results.

You can't put a price tag on the opportunity to spend time in the shop with Mr. Les George. Period.

Very nice. Clean design and execution. Great flow and ergonomics for the frame and great blade grinds. That's a winner.

It turned out very nicely, Locks up solid, releases smooth and travels smoothly though the whole range of motion.

Well done Bill, now do it again! :)

I gotta tell ya Bill, I'm not really a tactical-type guy. An awful lot of "tactical" knives are just plain clunky and ugly to my hand/eyes. (*ducks from all the folks throwing tomatoes at me*)

But that piece is so clean and sleek I just can't ignore it! I think it's a great design. 2thumbs

I remember asking Ken Onion why he still had a flipper on his first folder with a thumb stud, and commented that it seemed like a belt and suspenders.

What's wrong with that?
