Hey Mister Goo! Thanks for stopping by and please come back! I'm liking it here and interest seems to be happening.

You haven't been dancing with Babe?

I wish! I really miss that pig. I think one of the neighbors capped her. :(

I think your neighbor did you a favor with Babe. You know your not supposed to feed the critters.

Lets talk about hammers. I hear there's a new guy in town that has come up with this new hammer design that will be the new magic wand for all smiths. You know anything about this hammer?

Great to see you found this forum Tai, welcome to the pack

I haven't heard about that yet. Where can I get one? That sounds cool! 2thumbs

There's this guy named Kevin that said, "A hammer isn't a magic wand,... but heat is." I have no idea what that means or what he was talking about... superhypereurectiod or something bla bla bla...

You're probably right about "Babe", but I still miss some things about her. She was cute in an ugly sort of way... :)

Remember this? It's that song I wrote about her.

“JAVELIN BABE”
By One
(Key of F)

One night when I lay sleeping
Javelin Babe came to my door
She ate all my bird scratch and drank up all my corn
She came to me lonesome
On that warm and sunny day
Much to my regrets
I done chased her away

Javelina Javelina I still dream of you
Your teeth are sharp as razors and your eyes are cloudy blue

When I heard about her wild ways
And the past that she had seen
My friends all got to talking and told me she should leave
I put needles in her cradle and cactus in her bed
Now Javelin Babe is gone
But I hope that's she's not dead

Javelina Javelina I still dream of you
Your teeth are sharp as razors and your eyes are cloudy blue

You wandered off in the desert
I'm so lonesome now
Your home is in the wilderness
You cross eyed lonely sow

Javelina Javelina I still dream of you
Your teeth are sharp as razors and your eyes are cloudy blue

She came to me lonesome
On that warm and sunny day
Much to my regrets
I done chased her away

Javelina Javelina I still dream of you
Your teeth are sharp as razors and your eyes are cloudy blue

Javelina Javelina I still dream of you
Your teeth are sharp as razors and your eyes are cloudy blue

Tai, I'm not even going to mention his name.

Its funny all the years now that I have been hand forging I still tend to use the same hammers. I've made some hammers in the past that I thought were just great but would always go back to my old standby's. First one to get picked up is always my 6 pound sledge that I modified into a straight peen. I bet I do 60% of the blade with that one. Yesterday when I first started forging bevels I picked up a 3 pound Stanley cross peen with the fiberglass handle and really appreciated how the cross peen worked that day. Did you get your prototype made yet?

No, not yet, but it should be soon.

Here's some pics of the model for folks to look at.

If anyone is interested email me to get on the waiting list:
taigoo@msn.com

It's 7 inches from face to face with a 14 inch handle. I'm guessing it will be between 3-4 pounds, just about right for up to inch square or round stock.

Did you find a company locally that would make the hammer's? The more I think about a new hammer with both and straight and cross peen the more desirerable that would be to me. I like the thickness of the peen in the photo. Is it about 5/8" X 1 1/2"?

It's 3/4 by 2 and 1/8 on the model, but we may tweak it down a bit...

The machine shop I'm considering right now is owned by the guy working on the prototype, Nathan Carothers. I also have the possibility of having some forged with a press by a former student of mine, James Helm. Neither are local though. James is also going to do a forged prototype for me to try out.

I have thought about putting a straight peen on the other shorter end of the cross peen, in place of the round face.

That's a good sized hammer. Cool that you have someone in the States to do them. Tai, send the hammer to me to try out to, please! After your done of course. Have him do a double peen to.

mo money
I'll see what I can do Ray. I may actually wind up with several prototypes.

Having prototypes made and set up costs can run into some money, mo money depending on a number of things. However, I have also considered taking orders on (designing and engineering) some "custom hammers". How's that for an off the wall idea? mo money

Tai,

I'd never seen one like it either, so I blew my budget for the auction on it.

You're really testing my photo skills and camera, but here goes....2guns

Those are the only markings it has. If you recognize them please let me know where it came from. It's a great hammer.

Tai, When will they be ready for a test drive? I was thinking these hammer's would be forged to shape so I did a double take after looking at the photo. Tai, are most you hammers round face? I never really haven't used a round hammer for forging. Alway's more on the square side. Could it be I'm just square?

One
10-28-2009, 05:03 PM
I'm hoping to have the first batch by the end of the year.

I don't use any square faced hammers,... but round, hex and octagon,... and rectangular.

I about fell over when Nathan sent me that pic,... never seen a hammer like that before! It's the hammer of the future... Maybe NASA will make it their official space station forging hammer. LOL

Here’s a shot of the prototype. The texturing from the milling and machining will be a little different on the actual production runs.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/taigoo/LNFHproto012.jpg

I’ve tested it “real hard” and the heat treating does a great job of supporting the geometry.

This puppy might just make power hammers obsolete!

Here’s what Nathan said about the heat treating:

“The hammer prototype was made of precision ground annealed and normalized 4150. It was pretty spendy, though the heat treat was simple. Heat to 1200 and equalize (30 min), then austenitize at 1525, also 30 min due to the thick cross section. Quench in room temperature high speed quench oil (with agitation), remove after about 30 seconds and finish in still air (this is like pulling a blade after 8 seconds, still hot). Tempered twice at 400. Estimated hardness HRC 53. I don't own a hardness tester, but it skated a file (under the decarb) before temper. The decarb is probably about .010".

I won't be using that particular steel for production because the raw material cost was $43! Instead I'll be using 4150 directly from the mill. Is it hot rolled, with enormous grain. It will be abrasive sawed into blanks (because it would eat up bandsaw blades to saw cut). It gets annealed at 1650 and air cooled to form fine pearlite, then normalized at something like 1550, then again at 1450 for grain refinement, then a long sphearoidize soak at 1300 to make it more machinable.“ Nathan The Machinist
