What are the characteristics that distinguish the difference between the hunting sword, the hanger, the saber, and the cutlass?

I would take that question here- http://www.myarmoury.com/home.html -
The answer is likely to be fairly involved and might require some study. The site I linked has a relatively mature and scholarly base of members/collectors and is the best resource I have found for the study of historical edged weaponry.

Thanks guys, it's taking some digging but I think I'm starting to get at it. None of the sources seem real concrete distinguishers... But I think I'll get there.

Dig deep enough and what you will probably find is sub-categories and details/features with regional and chronological associations, more than any hard set of rules that classify one type from another. Blades were often imported and hilted to suit local tastes, which can complicate things even more, you may find two very similar blades mounted with wildly differing hilt styles from two different regions, etc.
