I have a knife that I would think would look great with a hamon on it but it is made of 440C. From what I understand 440c will not produce a hamon line or atleast not very well. I this correct?

Your correct, due to the high alloy content in 440C, it's practically impossible to achieve a hamon, at least nothing like you would see on simple carbon steels. On the commercially available blades that show hamons, most of those are done by selectively bead blasting the blade.
