So why the recent popularity of handle pins made from composite materials like G10, Micarta, etc. What advantages do they have?

Different colors. Many more choices than metal pins.

I’ve been using composite pins for years on and off. I like the contrast - sometimes.

I’m wondering if because they may not where is much wind ground say stainless steel pins, could you say finish your handle scales to like 98% and then pull them off and yet your blade or whatever you still need to do with the metal?

You can hide the pins in same handle materials where you almost cannot see them. i have used natural canvas pins and thong hole and you could not see them. Black micarta for black paper micarta bolsters are also good.
