Making a corkscrew. Question

I was curious as to what thickness and type of steel I should use to make a corkscrew. Also what hardness would be recommended? I figured a tool steel would be fine, but I'd like to only make a small pile of bad corkscrews before I am successful!

I know buying one is easier. But I had a well known wine maker ask me to make him a corkscrew and I'd like to do a great job for him. He k ow this would be a learning process.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I figure since this thread has been so active, I'd pass along that I was successful at my first attempt to forge a corkscrew. It's a pretty cool thing to put together in a short amount of time.

Never made one but I know a few guys that have. The interesting thing ( at least I thought so) was they did stock removal from a rod rather then twist it to form. Don't know if that helps any lol
