Hand sanded to 320. I am at an empass as to where to go past 400 for it to easily release food.
Well guess is time for more reading on here. 

Walt, you can save a good bit of time here. Starting out at 220 saves a ton of time if you know the surface isn't perfect. 320 will remove those pesky deep scratches, but you don't want to try to flatten out imperfections with 320. It will take all doggone day, and 220 will knock it right out. If you change directions with each grit it gets way easier to see what you left behind.

With a *good* 320 grit finish, you can jump right to 600 and call it a day. In my experience with stainless, it's ALL about being perfect at 320. A good 320 grit finish means that there are NO scratches, dings, dips, waves, etc. It should look finished. 600 just polishes out the 320 scratch pattern and gives it a more refined look.

Thamks John,I have a few 320 scratches there by the plunge line to get out still. I tried to hide in them and it didnt work there doesnt appear to be any waves or problem spots due to my grinds or my 40yo grinder. Lol

Will post a better bright light pic tomorrow. Off to family time. Also I wanted to say that grinding this steel is sooooooo much faster than the D2 planer blades and barely used up half of a new belt

I think I just found a problem with me and my grinding. Looks like two dips in the blade.

320 grit finish.

That dip haunts all of us I think. It's either at the 1" mark or the 2" mark, depending on what size belts you use. Every once in a while I get lucky, but most of the time I spend quite a while "flattening" every one I do. Looking good.

Here is the finished test/sacrificial blade. My nephew liked it for an edc/carving or whittlin knife so, its his now.

The other kitchen knife is ready to go to glue up in the morning after hand sanding flat the scales and scuffing the tang. Acetone wipe down in the am prior to glue up.

400 and wet sanding with danish oil due to this being natural coolibah burl and was recommended way per Mr J. Doyle as how to finish this wood.

Here is at 600 before calling it time for my family.

I think so to John, I calculated all the time on this and was only 20 hrs spent on it total. I like that as oppsed to 60hrs to get the same results.
Thanks Anthony.

Thanks Brandant. After seeing all of the light box and nice pics I need to stage a photo in better light to get more details shown. Or just see its character with more light.
