I have wanted to do a large bowie with a non traditional handle for a while. The handle design on my bush knife is one of my all time favorites.I took that handle design and blended it into a bowie blade.

Here the blade is shaped and the holes have been drilled and chamfered.

Next I goround my primary bevel and my swedge to 50 thousands. The primary was ground at 10 deg and the swedge at 15 .This is just my ruff in and will change during final grinding after heat treating.

I did a clay backed quench with a full quench on the blade. I soaked the knife at 1475 for 7 min then quenched in 130 deg oil.Not looking for a hamon or anything just a simple differential hardening. Then back to the oven at 450 for two one hour cycles.

Thanks everyone,I havnt yet decided on a handle material,I'm thinking black micarta with red liners but carbon fiber might be cool .

Ok hand sanding is complete,I have a thing about mirror polishing,if there is a flaw it will show up so no matter the finish I always go to a mirror polish .Now I will go back to 400 gritt and do a acid etch and stone wash.Still thinking about a handle material.

Theres some gnarley spotty flaws in the finish. Lol gotta love lint and water spots. Looks good man waiting for the rest of the story.

Ok let's pick up were I left off.I made my own micarta and after cutting to size glued up my liner material.Next I positioned the scale and blade in my holding jig and drilled my screw holes.I hate to reposition it in the jig so I counter sunk my screw holes and used the screws and standoffs to keep everything lined up so I could drill the thong hole.

After sanding the blade back with some 400 grit I added a resist of fingernail polish for my makers mark.My mark is a simple w and I have been thinking about adding a state outline so I gave it a test run on this knife. After the polish dried it's off to the acid bath.

After the acid dip next was netralizer and a oil soak. Then on to clean up and a little stone washing.then add my makers mark. After that I give the blade a few coats of hot wax and were ready for the scales.

Next I added the scales,I prefinished them and after adding a very thin coat of epoxy screwed them down.I'm using stainless standoffs and screws .I gave the screws some heat coloring by setting them face down on a hot plate out in my shop. All that's left is sharpening and a sheath.
