4130 chromemoly Steel question

I might be mistaken but I thought I saw a video where some hawks were made from chromemoly (4130 not 4140). Any of you guys ever try working with 4130? From what I have read you could make a super tough hatchet but the edge holding ability is my biggest concern. Data sheets are great but I don't want to forge a piston or crankshaft

Hi Brad!

4140 is what I use for my forging hammers. It is a "tough" steel, but makes very poor cutting implements. Compared to what we are used to, I would call a cutting edge on it "non-extistent". Even at it's highest hardness in the thickenss of a cutting edge....the edge will simply fold over. With only .40 carbon, hardening is very limited.
