Madrone wood

I have these two hunks of madrone aka arbutus wood. I think I can make some nice handle material out of them. Anyone have any experience with madrone?

I done a few knives with madrone scales. The wood I used was all red no white. Came out nice. Easy to work.

I use t all the time. Get it slab as soon as possible and start the drying. Makes a good knife handle

Madrone moves a lot while drying.
Best to cut slightly oversized and set it aside to dry.
Make sure it is under 10% moisture content before you use it.
If you use it before it is dry it is likely to warp and/or crack.

But when dry it has very small pores and finishes up nicely.
If you get it stabilized there won't be much of a weight gain.
Used natural (not stabilized) a danish oil finish works out well.

Anyone know, what's a good rule of thumb for time needed for madrone to dry? I have some that has been sitting covered outside for 3+ years.

I've got this big block of madrone burl. It's coated in wax, should I cut it up into scales, remove the wax then let it dry?
