Ok so I scored a set of Dewcarta scales and they are green and gray so Gots to go with a zombie survival style knife. This one is going to be made from a old snowmachine ski spring.I annealed the spring and flatened it out.

The way it worked and knowing that most springs are 5160 I would say that's what it most likely is,I heat treated it as 5160 and the grain looked great on the one I broke.

Ok got back from work and have half a dozen knives going, got the rebirth knife ground to 50 thousands edge with a 10 deg grind just to knock the edge off and heat treated it.1525 just like before for a 7min soak and quenched in 140 deg oil.Had some slight warpage on this one to so I am using the tried and true method of clamping to a straight piece of bar stock while tempering.

Well triple tempered and came out nice and straight.Cleaned it up and put the final grind on it.It's got some heavy whare marks in it from the other springs in the pack and I'm giving this one to my youngest boy who is a snowmachine nut .I told him it was going to take a lot of flat grinding to get rid of it and he wants them left in cause it shows character.Ok by me lol.

You just gotta love a knife being made for one of your kids!
I started flat grinding all of the knife blanks on my grinder before I grind the bevels. That way I get rid of all the imperfections and ensure that there will be no gaps between the handle material and the steel. Let us know how this turns out!

I do the same,I'm not a lover of hammer marks and such. This snowmachine spring has fought me all the way lol and after I snaped the first one I was going to give up on it ,this is a new desighn for me and this is the first one,I would normally be using O1 but my son begged me not to give up on the spring.

Ok couldn't take it and face ground it again and did the final grind, acid etched neutralized and oil soaked.Time to start the handle.Should I ever decide to use a snowmachine spring again to show my son it can be done shoot me please !

So I got the dewcarta scales ruffed in ,this set had some defects that I had to work around and the manufacturer is sending me a good set.Anyway she balances nice. After shaping the scales I pulled them off and added acraglass also added the thong tube which also I a recycle.it's a piece of 1960s fiberglass Microflight arrow.

Ok got it all done and hair popping sharp, there were some spots on the dewcarta that no amount of sanding or super glue would take out, it was smooth as glass but had that dry look to it.Dewey is taking care of it .Still need to make a sheath for it.I have been drawing and redrawing this prototype for a long time and am going to produce a few in 01 and D2 .This is my idea of what I would want in a combat/bush knife with one change,I had to do my grind on this one a bit higher than I wanted do to the imperfections in that crazy snowmachine spring. On a actual production knife I would do about a 7 deg beval closer to saber grind. This was a fun yet challenging.
