NOOB ALERT!!
I may be dum but what is the purpose behind the frame? Why not just leave the tang un-cut?

Several reasons, Roger. Mostly, just to show that I can do it Building the frame allows you to apply finishes to the guard and frame that you couldn't otherwise do with a regular tang. It's purely artistic, no real value in terms of performance.
