Had anyone ever split a 4x72" belt into (2) 2x72" belt? Trugrit sells a 4x72" Norton 36y belt that would save me a bunch of money on my initial grind belts, anybody done something like this with any success?

I believe if it's the same type of grit and the same size of grit and the same maker, the cost will end up being the same. Sandpaper in belts is sold by the square inch. Frank

I have split 2" x 72 belts into 1" x 72 so there is no reason you couldn't do it.
Like Frank said, Do the math to see if you are really saving anything?

The only other concern is the plunge lines from the cut side may not be very clean? Do your plunge on the factory edge. Then flip the belt over to get a equal looking plunge on the other side of your knife if you see any problems with this?

Frank,
you are prob right I don't think the 4x72 belt I was looking at was the same quality as the 2x72.

Mark,
Thanks for posting those links should be helpful if I want to split my own belts in the future, thanks.

Rhino,
That's solid advice I'll keep it in mind when using split belts
