This is a big, bad and beautiful bowie style knife by Jerry Fisk, ABS Mastersmith. Jerry was awarded National Living Treasure status and makes a few "NLT" designated knives each year. This one is #2 in 2012.

The photo doesn't show it but the blade has a chisel-ground and sharpened clip. OAL is 17 inches and the blade is 11 3/4 inches. Handle is nice fat piece of Sambar stag, dyed to produce rich reds, yellows and deep browns. To me it looks like the handle has its own fire inside. Very nice!
The Damascus pattern is what Jerry calls "Trail of Tears" and shows not only the trail but also pools of tears with many abstract faces and figures. He forged the blade from 1084 and 15N20 steels. The mounts are stainless and Jerry claims, "I drug the mounts on the road to provide the engraving." ;)
