Coast Guard Knife

Tom Militano

KNIFE MAKER
I made this knife for my son when he made Chief in the US Coast Guard. He served in the USCG for 25 years. The blade is 516 layer Edward's random pattern damascus. The handle I made out of assorted materials to make it look like the paint pattern on bow of Coast Guard ships. I put a small piece of copper in the etching solution to get the slight copper look on the blade

A Very Handsome Knife! I love the Coast Guard Handle Motif and the copper in the damascus.

What kind of acid did you use to etch? I just use warm white apple vinegar. I never worry about it eating or wrecking anything it's not suppose to!

I used ferric chloride with a small piece of copper in it to give it the color. The color has been on there a good while.

How long do you dip the blade in the ferric chloride solution or vinegar if using that? By the way, beautiful knife ! (from an x coasty)
