I know there are a million threads on the Sugar creek kiln

Not yet, but soon...

I have their Big Knife kiln without the digital controller.
I don't think the controller was even an option back when I acquired it.

The kiln itself still works great. (Just recently got the new shop wired for the 220.)
Will probably upgrade to a controller soon as I start working more frequently with complex stuff.
For now I've just been "winging it".

Good luck.

But has anyone bought the cheaper model and put there own controller on it?
Bama ,
I bought the Large Kiln, without the controller, and added the controller, at a later date when I could'nt afford it, it wasn't too difficult, and Jim ,(I think that's Sue's husbands name), was readily available for tech help. They are great and it's the best kiln for the money without a doubt! My advice is buy the bigger one, add the computer control when you can, the only problem with the regualar control is that you have to babysit it. And be real careful NOT to go over 2000 degrees!
