    Drilling hardened steel revisited

One thing that may go with out saying but I'll say it anyway. Put a bit in the press that is the size of the existing hole, run the bit down into the hole to locate the part and clamp it down. Then raise the bit and change to the new size. With the part clamped and the use of lube you will...

    primitive uniface tool

Here is a small scraper/cutter made from some left over CPM 3V. I made the string from the inner bark of a tulip tree. No tools were used to make the string. It was just pulled off the dead tree and soaked in the creek and twisted. Thanks for looking James

    A new take on survival

Good observation but I thought of that too.lol The wrench attaches to the back of the sheath and does not need to come off to be used. That was the reason for this type of screw. The wrench is flat and tucks away. If it does need to be removed in the field, once the scales are off, the hobby...

    A new take on survival

Thanks to everyone for the comments. It has taken 6 months to put this together and I am pleased with the end result. I will always be looking for ways to add custom features. AND enough field time to test them. Regards James

    A new take on survival

Here is a new model I have been putting together for a while now. It is called the Etowah S-1. It comes in a few levels. This is the top mod. with the survival kit. It contains some unique features that are not found in other kits. One option I am trying to work out is the micro pulley block &...

    Boot Clip on Kydex Sheath?

Sorry I have been absent lately. The kydex is molded over a 1/8" X 1" bar laying on a larger plate all set up in the foam press. Then it is cut down to size to match the sheath, holes drilled and such. then I locate where the clip needs to be and drill the holes for it. The rivets are the post...

Here is a pic of a Spy Knife I made set up where the clip is on a plate that can be removed if you want to switch to neck carry.

    Let's talk about nickel silver..

I made this with NS liners. The handle being green canvas with an acid etched D2 tang made for a good contrast. The blade and tang was etched after grinding and polishing. The NS turned a light white color that polished off with 0000 steel wool, but did not affect the etch. Had I used SS liners...

    American Chestnut and 1095

Thanks for sharing. As a certified arborist, I know little about these trees. However, my real affection for the trees is due to my Grand Father and Great Grand Father cut some of the american chestnut trees that were still standing in Hayesville NC years after they had died. Most of that wood...

    Straight Razors

Since from the edge well up into the blade is paper thin, they need to be wet ground. The edge needs to be flexible because it is so thin. If you harden the edge to much it will chip and then it will be like shaving with a micro saw blade. I would temper for less hardness. You will want to strop...

    Packaging

I ship a lot through the USPS and everything gets delivery confirmation. It seems that they pay more attention if the package has something extra like that on it. Before I started doing that, things would wind up lost or damaged from time to time. I have not had one to date have a problem that...

    Budget small wheel

That reminds me... I have a foot switch I use sometimes on the low amp tools. It helps with the Dragster because it's a pain to reach the trigger lock with dust collector installed. You just leave it on and press the foot foot switch when you walk up to it.

    Modified Coote?

If I understand what you are trying to do, if you replace the idler/tracking wheel with a contact wheel on a two wheel grinder, you will lose the crown in the wheel which is what helps control tracking. Does the tracking wheel on your grinder have a crown?

    Budget small wheel

I got mine at Home Depot. The belts are 3" wide I think. I can't remember the length but they are available there and other places. The speed is fine for this work but belt grit selection amounts to fine, med, or course. There is a button that holds the trigger down so you can use both hands. It...

There is somewhat of a platen. It would be big enough for handle scales. It is the surface facing the user. James
